New advanced cancer treatment, ultrashort pulses of strong electric fields solution

Cancer treatment based on ultrashort pulses of strong electric fields has been developed as a novel biological application. The application of astrong pulsed electric field with a nanosecond duration caninduce apoptosis in cancer cells. This tech-nology is expected to enable cancer treatment with a smallerburden on the human body.

we applied burst pulses with one or fiveoscillations to HeLa cells and investigated the efficiency of theburst pulse. A low rate of cell death was observed immediatelyafter pulses were applied to HeLa S3 cells, but a higher level ofcell death was observed over time, indicating that programedcell death was induced.

For a given amount of energy suppliedto the cells, the burst pulse with five oscillations was moreefficient in inducing cell death compared with that for oneoscillation. Therefore, we have confirmed that the burst pulseis superior to the single pulse.
